The International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, known as AIPPI (Association Internationale pour la Protection de la Propriété Intellectuelle), is a leading global non-profit organization focused on developing and enhancing laws for intellectual property protection. Based in Switzerland, AIPPI is politically neutral and has over 8,000 members from more than 110 countries.

Aims and Purpose

AIPPI is an organisation which has been shaping IP for over 120 years.

AIPPI’s mission is to advance and advocate for better protection of intellectual property at both international and national levels. It achieves this by working on the development, expansion, and enhancement of international treaties, regional agreements, and national laws related to intellectual property. AIPPI conducts studies of existing national laws and recommends measures for their harmonization on a global scale. When appropriate, AIPPI also makes submissions to major courts and legislative bodies to advocate for stronger IP protection.

Organization of AIPPI

AIPPI members include individuals interested in national or international intellectual property protection, such as lawyers, patent attorneys, judges, scientists, engineers, and corporations. The organization is divided into 66 National and 2 Regional Groups, with membership obtained through joining one of these Groups, or as an Independent Member in countries without a Group.

Meetings and Networking

AIPPI hosts an annual World Congress open to all members, typically in September or October, attracting up to 2,000 attendees. This Congress serves as a forum for discussing international law, providing educational programs, and offering professional development opportunities. The Executive Committee and Council of Presidents also meet during the Congress.

In addition to the World Congress, AIPPI holds online meetings throughout the year on various topics, including law development in smaller jurisdictions and events for Young AIPPI Members. National and Regional Groups also organize in-person meetings, such as the yearly Trilateral Meeting of the AIPPI Groups from France, Germany, and Poland. These gatherings provide excellent opportunities for members to build personal and professional relationships.

AIPPI’s Achievements

AIPPI has significantly contributed to the advancement of IP law, including promoting revisions to the Paris Conventions, establishing the Trade Marks Law Treaty, and influencing legal frameworks with its Resolutions. AIPPI is recognized as an active participant in major international discussions on IP law, such as the Patent Law Treaty, the European Community Patent Convention, and the Madrid Protocol.

AIPPI’s History

Founded in 1897, AIPPI emerged following the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property in 1883. The organization has a long history of contributing to the development and harmonization of IP laws worldwide. Despite interruptions during the World Wars, AIPPI has grown into a truly international association, with members from across the globe. Over its history, AIPPI has adopted more than 700 Resolutions and Reports, significantly influencing international IP protection.

AIPPI Strategy 2024-26

AIPPI plans to continue providing valuable forums for discussions on legal developments, IP practice management, and the impact of technology.

The organization emphasizes the connection between intellectual property and sustainable development, aligning its work with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). AIPPI’s IP and Sustainability Standing Committee, along with its other Committees, plays a crucial role in promoting innovation and sustainable practices in line with these goals.

Harmonization and Improvement of IP Laws

AIPPI has long aimed to harmonize IP laws to create a consistent and predictable legal environment, especially beneficial for international businesses. However, modern challenges require extending traditional legal frameworks to address new issues like protecting intellectual creativity in digital content distribution and safeguarding large data-driven AI systems. AIPPI focuses on aligning IP protection with creative input and continues to propose harmonized solutions to emerging legal challenges.

Opportunities for a Stronger Voice

AIPPI seeks to expand its influence by advocating for IP protection through amicus curiae submissions and third-party interventions. The organization also aims to strengthen its presence in international bodies like WIPO, EUIPO, and EPO to contribute more effectively to treaty discussions and the harmonization of IP laws. By maintaining and creating new opportunities as an observer in governmental bodies, AIPPI continues to play a significant role in shaping the future of IP protection globally.

The 2024 AIPPI World Congress is scheduled to be held from 19th to 22nd October 2024 in Hangzhou, China. Mark your calendar and and we’d be glad to meet you there. If you’d like to schedule a meeting with us, please get in touch to arrange a time. We look forward to connecting with you there!
